For my daughters

My fupu cried a lot when she had a baby daughter — she did not want another being to suffer in the same way she did. We would laugh a lot about this story as we had our beautiful, talented and kind sister among us, thinking that my fupu must have changed her mind. She is not with us anymore, sharing my tributes for her.

Today, on a lazy morning, I was feeling hopeless — thinking about my fupu’s thoughts. A young woman was raped when she was on her evening stroll with her husband (yes, that does make a difference in a “good girl’s” label). Another indigenous woman was raped which is not even talked about much at this point. Few days back, another young married woman was beaten to death since she wanted to study more. Any one can get killed/abused with or without reasons but these incidents were justified by men and women from society — many of which seemed religious (new style, Bangla writing using lots of foreign words).

Can any of you suggest me what to teach my daughters?

Not to be too smart? (May get killed)

Not to be too dumb? (May get killed)

Not to be married? (May get killed/raped)

Not to remain unmarried? (May get killed/raped)

….

What or what not?
